Daily Readings – The Forgiving Avenger!

Day 1835: Continuing through Psalms!

Scripture: He spoke to them (Moses and Aaron) in the pillar of cloud; they kept His testimonies and the statute that He gave them. Lord our God, You answered them; You were a forgiving God to them, and yet an avenger of their evil deeds. Psalm 99:7, 8

Thoughts/questions: Balance is usually desired, as extremes are often just that – extreme! With God, we need to balance His forgiveness and His being the avenger of evil deeds.

Only focusing on forgiveness can bring a lackadaisical attitude toward our sin. An example would be Catholics and the confessional. Too often this gives a license to do whatever we want with the assurance that God will forgive us anyway.

Only an avenger of evil deeds would make us fearful to ever make a mistake and result in a life of guilt and shame. Balance is key as God is both! We rest in His forgiveness, but must never take advantage of it! Sin is evil and we must seek to avoid any and all sin wit the assurance of His forgiveness when we fall short of perfection!

Suggested prayer: Lord God, thank You for Your loving forgiveness . . .
