Words in Red – Tradition!!!

Day 1505: A friend asked for God2me readers to pray for his friend, Eric, who needs a physical healing from Jesus. Please pray!

Scripture:   “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  They worship me in vain; they teach as doctrine the teachings of men.’  For you have neglected the commandments of God, but are holding on to the traditions of men.”   Then He also said, “You are experts at setting aside the commandments of God in order to observe your traditions!  For Moses said, ‘Honor your Father and Mother’; and ‘He who speaks evil of his Father or Mother is to be put to death.’  But you say that someone can say to his Father or Mother, ‘I can’t help you, for I have vowed to give to God what I could have given to you.’  Then you no longer allow them to do anything for their Father or Mother thus invalidating the word of God by the tradition that you have handed down.  And you do many things like that.”  Mark 7:6-13

Context:  Jesus was responding to the Pharisees – a Jewish sect who thought themselves better than others and they had created a number of rules to live by.

Thoughts/questions:  Holding on to the traditions of men results in invalidating the word of God.  An example might be some churches’ concern about dancing.  Their rule regarding not dancing was to keep young people from sexual temptation, but soon the fence around the sin became the sin itself and to dance was to sin.   I was aware of those who would not dance, but engaged in sexual activities – not good!

Jesus reminds us in no uncertain terms (hypocrites!) that we are never to play the role of god.  God has given us plenty of parameters to live within and has definite purposes for each one.  Let’s be sure that it is our heart’s desire to follow Him and only Him!!!

Suggested Prayer:  Lord, help my focus to be on You and You alone . . .
