Words in Red – In or Out?

Day 1506: Happy b’day to my son Jonathan!!!

Context:  Jesus had just spoken to the Pharisees and now was talking to the surrounding crowd.  After He left them, His disciples asked Jesus to clarify His previous remarks.

Scripture:  “All of you need to listen to me and try to understand.  You are not defiled by what goes into you; rather, you are defiled by what you say and do.”  “Don’t you understand either?” He asked.  “Can’t you see that nothing that enters you from the outside can defile you?  Food doesn’t come into contact with your heart, but goes into your stomach and then goes out of your body.”  And then He added, “What proceeds out of you is what defiles you.  For from within, out of your hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly.  All these evil things proceed from within and defile you.”  Mark 7:14b, 15, 18, 19, 20-23

Thoughts/questions:  What an amazing, albeit humbling, thing it would have been to have actually listened to Jesus’ teachings.  He definitely was a straight shooter as He just called the Pharisees hypocrites, questioned His own disciples’ ability to understand His teachings, and then listed so many sins that all of His listeners had to feel some sort of conviction.

Even now we seem to focus on what goes in, not what is coming out – we continually talk about our current diet, how much we love chocolate, the latest and greatest restaurant, carbs/no carbs, etc.  Maybe we should concentrate more on Jesus’ words and pay more attention to what is proceeding from within than any dietary concerns!

Suggested Prayer:  Lord, help me to think less about what is going into my body and more about what is coming out . . .
