Words in Red – Extremes!

Day 1912: Look up – God reveals Himself in the heavens!

Context:  In the first quote, Jesus is still speaking to the crowd.  In the second, Jesus had just undergone the transfiguration and then responds to Peter, James and John’s question regarding Elijah returning before the Messiah comes.

Scripture:  “Truly I say to you, there are some who are standing here right now who will not die before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”     “To be sure, Elijah does come first and restores all things.  Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?  But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written about him.”   Mark 9:1,12,13

Thoughts/questions:  These two quotes demonstrate the unique extremes of Jesus!  First He predicts His transfiguration. Peter, James, and John witnessed the reality of the power and glory of God in Christ Jesus at the transfiguration – who wouldn’t want to be a follower of the One about whom a voice from heaven spoke saying, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!”

Then the other extreme regarding following this Jesus – the transfigured exalted One who also talks about Himself as suffering many things and being treated with contempt!  Now who wants to be His follower and be like Him???  Not too many volunteers to suffer contemptuously!

But we get both – His glory and His suffering – a package deal!  His essence is His glory; His choice was to suffer.  He was well aware of both, YET still made the choice to suffer FOR us so that we could share in His glory!!!  JESUS – name above all names!

Suggested Prayer:  Jesus, thank You so much for loving me enough to suffer . . .
