Words in Red – Values

Day 1917: Make your Monday a great one by helping a child!

Context:  This continues Jesus’ response to His disciples.

Scripture:  But if anyone causes one of these little one who trusts in Me to stumble, it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around their neck.  If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better to enter life with one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.”  Mark 9:42-44

Thoughts/questions:  One of the many reasons to be attracted to Jesus is the way He dealt with children.  A few verses earlier He took one into His arms, and here He warns us regarding how we spiritually care for them.  Today’s children lose their innocence at such an early age and it is getting worse.  Jesus shows how much He values that innocence by His response to anyone who might negatively impact any child who loves Him – not a good future.  We too must treasure children and work to support these young Christ followers any way we can!!!

Jesus is certainly not being meek and mild in His words – ‘better to be drowned/better to cut off one’s hand’ – serious stuff!  Our hand – the primary tool of our body.  Our hands heal/hurt, create/destroy, work/rest, hug/punch, and on and on – without hands and that ever helpful opposing thumb, our life would not exist as we know it, yet Jesus says that if our hands impede our spiritual progress, we should cut them off!  Wow!  To Jesus, the value of our spiritual life far exceeds the value of the most important tool of our physical body!  Let’s work to make our value system match up with His!

Suggested Prayer:  Lord, help me to treasure children and to strive to eliminate sin in my life . . .
