Words in Red – High Standards!

Day 1918: May our words honor You . . .

Context:  Continuation of Jesus’ talk with His disciples.

Scripture:  “If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off.   It is better to enter life with one foot than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two feet.  If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out.  It is better to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two eyes, where the worm never dies and the fire is not quenched.”   Mark 9:45-48

Thoughts/questions:  If someone’s idea of Jesus is that He was merely a kind teacher of love who accepted any and all behaviors and allows everyone to ‘go to the light’ when they die, Mark 9:42-48 should radically change that view.  Tough, straight talk from the God who created the universe!  Sin is not tolerated!

Two things:  1) Although God has a standard and doesn’t view sin lightly – He forgives!!!  No disciple went around on one leg, with one eye, and only having one hand – they experienced Jesus’ forgiveness yet took their relationship with Him seriously enough to give their lives as martyrs.

2) Jesus did not arbitrarily set a standard He Himself didn’t meet.  He would say of Himself, “If it takes leaving heaven, becoming human, being scourged, and dying from crucifixion to bring salvation to undeserving mankind, I WILL do it.  It is better for me to die so that they can be forgiven and escape the unquenchable fires of hell.”  He is our example, our mentor, our teacher, our guide, our Lord, and our Savior!

We must take sin seriously and seek two things – to make every effort to live a holy life and receive forgiveness when we fall short!

Suggested Prayer:  Jesus, thank You for forgiving me – help me not to need it so much . . .
