Words in Red – Follow me!

Day 1923:  Sunday Funday!!!

Context:  A man described as a rich young ruler ran to Jesus and fell on his knees asking, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  The man said he had followed the commandments Jesus listed.  Jesus looked on him with a genuine love, but upon hearing the instructions to sell everything, the man left sorrowing.

Scripture:  “Why do you call Me good?  No one is good except God alone.  You know the commandments:  Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not testify falsely, do not cheat, honor your father and mother.”  “You lack only one thing,” He told the man.  “Go and sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come and follow Me.”   Mark 10:18, 19, 21b

Thoughts/questions:  Jesus first questions the man causing him to reflect on whom he was addressing.  We often start our prayers with words like, Father, Lord God, Heavenly Father – Jesus could easily ask us – “Do you REALLY know whom you are talking to?  You are talking to Almighty God!!!”  He wants us, as He did the rich young ruler, to fully realize what we are saying when we use these names!

Although this man may have obeyed the commandments Jesus listed, he was guilty of not following the very first one – You shall have NO other gods before Me!  As good as we might be, it is not enough.  If we are going to come and be Christ followers, we will have to put Him first.  No other gods can replace Him no matter who or what they are.  Although Jesus also looks upon each of us with genuine love, He still expects us to obey the first commandment!

Suggested Prayer:  Jesus, You are the Almighty God of the universe!  I will have no other gods before You . . .
