Words in Red – We are to Love!

Day 1941: A bit ago I asked God2me readers to pray for Eric who has with cancer. Met him yesterday and he is currently doing well with one more chemo treatment to go. Great family guy – keep praying for him please!

Context:  Finally Jesus was asked a serious question by a religious leader – ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’

Scripture:  Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no other commandment greater than these.”  Mark 12:29-31

Thoughts/questions:  We use the word ‘love’ in so many ways, and that overuse trivializes it in comparison with what God intended in these verses.  We say we love our pets, cars, favorite TV shows/movies, jobs, songs – the list goes on.  God’s love focuses on relationships.  First and foremost  our relationship with Him, then others!

What a quest Jesus has set us on – to get to the point in which All of our being responds in love to Him.  A connection with the living God at the deepest level with all the fervor we have!  What He has done, is doing, and will do for us combine to make Him worthy of this response.  Take a moment and tell Him how much you love Him and that you desire to love Him more – with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!

This love is not so spiritually enthralling that it is of no earthly good.  No, this intensity of love for God will overflow to others as ‘self’ will be minimized and ‘others’ prioritized.  A vertical love with horizontal implications – no other commandment greater than these!

Suggested Prayer:  Dear Lord, help me to love You and others more every day . . .
