Words in Red – Sorrow!

Day 1959: May the Lord guide you today . . .

Context:  Jesus came to the Garden of Gethsemane and took Peter, James and John while He prayed.  They fell asleep three times.

Scripture:  “Sit here while I go and pray,”  Jesus told them. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  Stay here and watch for me.”  “Simon”, He said to Peter, “Are you asleep?  Couldn’t you stay awake and watch with me even one hour?  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.  The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”  Returning to them a third time, He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?  Enough!  The hour has come.  Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.  Get up and let’s be going!  See, my betrayer is here!”  Mark 14:32b, 34, 37b, 38, 41, 42

Thoughts/questions:  Sorrow upon sorrow!  The whole Passion Week brought Jesus pain, betrayal, frustration, and sorrow at every turn.  Here He takes His closest disciples to join Him when earlier, He is described as ‘very distressed and troubled.’  At least He could count on these three for support – but no, sadly no.

“Enough!”  Jesus probably wanted to say that word so many times during His last three years on earth.  Now, He expresses those inner feelings as it was the beginning of the end – His betrayer is here and His ministry is over – it is now time for Him to die to redeem those who slept; to redeem you; to redeem me!

Many of us have also fallen asleep while praying.  I hope that when Jesus sees us, He simply smiles and spiritually tucks us in for the night knowing that our flesh is weak.  In spite of this, let us earnestly seek to serve Him with our whole heart, so that His previous sorrows are replaced by Him rejoicing and being blessed by us, His children!

Suggested Prayer:  Jesus, may my life bring You joy . . .
