Words in red – Sins Forgiven!

Day 1961: Almost at the end of words in red . . .

Context:  Jesus was on the cross and darkness had come over the land for the last three hours.  He was being mocked and insulted.

Scripture:  At three o’clock in the afternoon, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”  Mark 15:34

Thoughts/questions:  Is Jesus personally seeking the answer to this question, or is it one of His ‘loaded’ questions to impact those who heard it?  I believe it is the second.  When Jesus said, “Not My will, but Thine be done,” the question of why He was going to have to go through all of this had been answered for Him.

However, those surrounding His crucifixion had NOT answered the question of ‘just who is this Jesus’.  As His other questions throughout the Gospel of Mark made others think, so this question would have as well.  Non-believers might have responded to Jesus’ question with  – “Who is this convicted criminal to ask why He had been forsaken by God? – Maybe there is more to Him than I thought!”

A believer in Jesus might respond with – “Just why IS God forsaking Jesus at His moment of greatest need?”  Our sin is the answer – Jesus took on the enormity of the world’s sin!  ‘Why did God forsake Him?’ – because the entirety of that sin was too great for God to look upon, even while encapsulated in His own Son.

Jesus’ question reminds us just HOW great the Father’s and Son’s love is!  Yes, even though the Father forsook Jesus when He took on the sin of the world, He did not forsake us – No, He forgave us!  Our sins were as scarlet, but now are white as snow!!!

Suggested prayer:  Lord, You have chosen to forgive me.  I am not worthy of that forgiveness, but THANK You . . .
