Fruit of the Spirit — Show His Goodness!

Day 1982: MMM Make your Monday Matter!!!

Scripture:  When I thirst for Him, He satisfies my soul, and when I hunger for Him, He fills my life with His goodness.  Psalms 107:9   Being part of the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what I eat or drink, but of my living a life of goodness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.  Romans 14:17

Thoughts/questions:  Having goodness is expressed in doing good things.  The difficulty here is that if we only ‘do’ good things’, these things are often self-generated and self-extolling.  If we say we have the Holy Spirit and are Christ followers, but don’t do any good deeds, then we would be deceiving ourselves.  The key is our motivation and our obedience.  We get it right when our motivation is to allow God to express His goodness through us by our ‘good’ behaviors, and we are obedient when He shows us what ‘good’ deeds we should do. Daily seek Him, and then look for opportunities to show His goodness to others without any self serving motives.

I’ll never forget a conversation with someone who was no longer walking with the Lord.  He said that he started drifting from God when the following happened.  His car was broken down at a corner on a Sunday morning.  Someone stopped to turn, so he asked the driver if he could help him.  The driver responded with, ‘I’d like to, but I can’t because I’m on my way to church’ and continued on his way.  The Holy Spirit’s fruit of goodness in us is NOT attending church, but it IS sharing the goodness of God in every situation.  Don’t miss the opportunities to do the good that He puts in our path

Our problem is that God is inherently good, yet our natural tendencies tend toward the bad.  So we need to daily commit to Him our desire to show His goodness, and then let Him direct us to the people and places to do just that!!!

Suggested prayer:  God, let Your goodness flow through me into the lives of others today and every day . . .
