Daily Readings — Everything Happens for a Reason! (Part 1)

Day 2023: Half of 2015 ends today!

Scripture:  And I know that God causes all things to work together for my good because I love Him, and I am called according to His purpose for me! Romans 8:28

Thoughts/questions: God has declared in today’s verse that everything does happen for a reason, but to believe this do we have to make a leap of faith or is it a mere step? This analogy may help.

I’ve used this often and it is the single most impactful analogy I’ve ever shared. A damaged person is asked their favorite fruit or vegetable and say they pick an apple. They are then asked how a farmer grows juicy apples and the answer is to water and fertilize the apple tree. Then it is pointed out that fertilizer is crap and if the apple tree had a choice, it would definitely refuse the crap. However, a miracle happens whereby the crap moves through the tree into the apples making them juicy and better tasting.

Then I’ll draw a caricature representing them at birth and draw a line to a slightly different caricature of them now indicating some change. We talk about the ‘stuff’ they’ve gone through and how much of it was ‘crap.’ The crap has produced some bad and some good in their present caricature. I then ask them to identify areas in their lives which are better because they endured the ‘crap.’ The lists vary, but each one has been able to come up with distinct areas in which their lives are better than someone who has not been through similar challenges.

I then share how God has shown us in nature that He can use crap to make better fruits and vegetables, and if He can do that in the physical world, He can surely also do this in our psychological/emotional lives! The rest of the story tomorrow!

Suggested prayer: Father God, help me to trust You to make good out of all the crap I’ve gone through . . .
