Coach Wooden — My Rights?

Day 2177: The Almighty reigns!!!

Scripture:  I am not to do anything out of selfishness or vain conceit, but with all humility, I should consider others as more important than myself!  I should not only look out for my own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.  My attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had.  Philippians 2:3-5

Thoughts/questions:  For the next few days God2me will be doing Daily Readings interspersed with sayings and quotes from John Wooden – famous coach of UCLA basketball, committed Christian, and family man!  The first quote is “Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights!”

I’m sure Coach Wooden’s quote was a paraphrase of today’s Bible verses!  Both use the word consider – meaning reflect on, examine, or look carefully.  Often we don’t take the time to stop and consider anything.  Here we are advised to reflect on ourselves in reference to others, and both the quote and verses highlight our need to place others before ourselves – their feelings, their rights, and their interests!

Our tendency is to cry out like the seagulls in the movie, Finding Nemo, “Mine, mine, mine!”  Self is a formidable opponent hence the need to ‘consider’ – to take the time to put things in their proper perspective – We are not first, and we are not even second – God first, others next, us third!!!  Let’s agree with Paul and Coach Wooden and not get this order confused – we are to consider others as more important than ourself!!!

Suggested prayer:  Christ Jesus, help me to be like You and treat others the way You did . . .
