Proverbs — Proverbs 6:27-35

Day 2281:  God’s mercies are new every morning!!!! (Even Mondays!)

Scripture:  Can I take fire into my lap and not be burned?  Can I walk on hot coals and not scorch my feet?  No, that will happen if I sleep with another man’s wife – embracing her will bring punishment upon me.  I might have an excuse if I were starving and stole for something to eat.  Yet, if I were caught, I would have to pay seven times what I took even if it meant having to sell everything in my house to pay it back.  But if I commit adultery, I demonstrate a lack of understanding by destroying myself.  Wounds and disgrace will be my lot, and my shame will not be blotted out.  For the jealousy I kindled in the husband will grow to a rage and there will be no mercy in his day of vengeance.  No amount of compensation or bribery will stop him. Proverbs 6:27-35

Thoughts/questions:  IF we can learn through someone else’s experience and resulting wisdom, then we don’t have to go through the pain ourselves and we have spared our body/soul/spirit from something extremely hard.  The key is ‘can we learn’ vicariously through the wisdom gained from another’s pain?

Proverbs shouts to us that God does not want us to be ‘experiential learners,’ but to gain wisdom from the teachings in His word.  This section repeats sexual warnings, which can be expanded to include ‘playing with fire’ in any aspect of our lives.   When certain behaviors have ‘rehab centers’ for the misuse of those behaviors, we should be very careful or maybe not do them at all!

Suggested prayer: Lord Almighty, may Your teachings be my guide, and may I not rely on my personal experiences . . .
