Proverbs — Proverbs 29:12-17

Day 2396: Another day to be thankful!

Scripture:  If a ruler listens to lies, all of his advisers will become wicked.  The poor and the oppressor have this in common – the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.  If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secure.  The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets their own way brings shame to their mother.  When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but by being righteous, I will see their downfall.  Discipline your children and they will give you peace of mind and bring delight to your soul.  Proverbs 29:12-17

Thoughts/questions: Permissive parenting. If I were parenting today, I would probably take an opposite strategy and intentionally put obstacles in my kids’ paths and say no even when the appropriate answer was yes. These tests would have then been talked about later, and together we would discuss and analyze their reactions to adversity. Instead, they may have had it too easy, after all, shouldn’t we try to keep difficulties away from them???

There are no 100% guarantees regarding good, godly parenting; however, research shows permissive parenting to definitely increase anti-social behavior (again, not 100% of the time).  Proverbs definitely warns that the child who gets their own way has not been given any favors from their parents.  Although self-control is a fruit of the Spirit, self-discipline is a fruit of effective parental training!

In love, we must teach our children what the word ‘NO’ means; not let them always have their own way; at times resort to tough love; and be consistent and follow through even when it is hard!!!

Suggested Prayer:  Lord, be with those parents who sorrow over the choices their children have made . . .
