Great Chapters in the Bible — Psalm 23

Day 2211:  Today, we should be ending our trip to Europe!

Scripture:  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.  Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.   Psalm 23:4

Thoughts/questions:  We all walk through some very difficult times, and this verse uses an analogy that has so much more to it when you consider 2 things.  The first is that for there to be a valley, there has to be higher ground surrounding it.  Sometimes when we are in the valley, we have our heads down and only notice the depth of our condition, but there always is His higher ground, and we must look up to the promise of the mountaintop and let our Shepherd lead us upward to His higher ground!!!!

The second is that for there to be a shadow, there has to be a light!  The shadow of death may seem to encircle our spirit to the extent that we can barely notice the light, but it is ONLY a shadow.  The Light of the World is shining in His completeness behind the difficulties of our lives and soon we will move from the shadows into His marvelous light!!!

When we are in the midst of difficult times, fear can run rampant, as we are afraid that if one more thing were to happen to us, we wouldn’t be able to handle it.  BUT, He is with us.  When we chose to become a Christ follower, we eliminated something in our life – the possibility of ever being alone.  Our Shepherd was, is, and forever will be with us!!!  We never go through anything alone!

And He brings help!  When I do projects, I always have more confidence (comfort) when someone helps me who 1) knows what they’re doing, and 2) brings appropriate tools!  A shepherd’s tools are his rod and staff and as David demonstrated, those were enough to ward off danger from his sheep.  In this analogy, God’s tools are compared to a rod and a staff.  HOWEVER, what He brings for our comfort is soooooo much more.   The Creator of the universe has EVERYTHING we need for ANY situation!!!  That comforts me!

Suggested prayer:  Lord, I will fear no evil, for You are with me . . .
