Psalms — Psalm 55 – Get What You Want?

Day 2626: Last TGIF in 2016! Thank God I’m Forgiven one more time!!!

Scripture: Give ear to my prayer, O God; and do not hide Yourself from my supplication. My heart is in anguish within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me. I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. “Behold, I would wander far away. I would lodge in the wilderness.” Selah.

For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, then I could bear it; nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me, then I could hide myself from him. But it is you, a man my equal, my companion and my familiar friend; we who had sweet fellowship together walked in the house of God in the throng.

Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. But I will trust in You. Excerpts from Psalm 55

Thoughts/questions: The Psalmist is overwhelmed by terrors of death. His initial solution was to fly away like a dove. His final conclusion was to trust God and cast his burdens on the Lord!

We have a bird feeder which once attracted up to 100 doves at a time. Now, we barely get one. The problem is what the Psalmist forgot to consider – as one day we saw a hawk roosting right near the feeder, awaiting the low hanging fruit of a distracted dove. Sadly, it drove almost all the doves away.

The simple solution is this: don’t run from your issues, but jump quickly to the final conclusion found in this Psalm! Trust God and cast your burdens on the Lord! It will be a better New Year when you do!

Suggested prayer: Almighty God, running away is so inviting, but help me to realize the truth in Your word . . .
