Thoughts for 2017 — Playing the God Card!

Day 2647: Continuing the ‘C’s’ for 2017!

Scripture: (Jesus speaking) But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. Matthew 5:37

Thoughts/questions: Changing one’s mind can be a good thing. Changing one’s commitments without the consent of the person to whom the commitment was made is NOT a good thing!

When going back on a commitment, some will play what I call the God Card – God has told me that I have to . . . . The blame goes to God; responsibility is not taken; and one’s word becomes worthless.

Emergencies happen and the best laid plans of mice and men fail, so sometimes changes HAVE to be made. But these times should be minimal and every attempt should be made to fulfill one’s commitment even at one’s own expense!

At other times, the one whom you’re committed to will agree to the change, but contact them only after praying about it. Better to follow thru at one’s own peril than to destroy a relationship or minimize the value of your commitments and bring a negative opinion regarding Christ followers.

Jesus gave a high priority to letting your yes be yes! He also said that we should not start to plow unless we plan on finishing. This calls for preplanning, not just flippantly committing to actions without considering possible consequences. And when these possible consequences show themselves, letting your yes be yes may be inconvenient, wasteful, or a cause of great loss.

Yet as Christ followers, we are to follow His words regardless of the consequences. Make 2017 a year in which what you say IS what you mean!

Suggested prayer:  Dear Jesus, let the words of my mouth be acceptable in Your sight and in the ears of the hearer . . .
