Thoughts for 2017 — Horizontal Living?

Day 2655: We’ve recently had devotions on p’s and and c’s, now we’re into h’s!

Scripture:  I should set my mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2

Thoughts/questions: For those in the U.S., the past year has been filled with presidential primaries, conventions, elections, post election drama, inauguration, demonstrations, and protests. Mass media and social media scream for us to involve ourselves with the cares of earth; the world; the horizontal. Horizontal living is a negative thought for 2017; something to be avoided. Minds set on the horizontal will NOT be of much heavenly good.

James Boice put it this way: ‘Do you see spiritual things clearly? Or is your vision of God and His will for your life clouded by spiritual cataracts or near-sightedness brought on by an unhealthy preoccupation with things (horizontal living)? I am convinced that this is true for many Christians, particularly those living in the midst of Western affluence.’

Because the election is over, 2017 might be an easier you to look up instead of around. To set our minds on this that are above can be your dominant theme for the coming year. The horizontal often frustrates and irritates causing anger and despair! Vertical living brings an eternal perspective and purpose causing peace and hope. Look up!!!

Suggested prayer: Dear Lord, I need Your peace and hope. Help me to set my mind on things above . . .
