Psalms — Psalm 78 – A Proper Response!

Day 2682: Thanx for reading! Blessings to you all!

Scripture:  Listen, O my people, to my instruction; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should teach them to their children, that the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children.

That they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments, and not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The next verses, 9 – 71, the Psalmist reviews Jewish history and their rebellion against God ending with this:

So he (David) shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

Excerpts from Psalm 78 (Only Psalm 119 is longer!)

Thoughts/questions: The bulk of this Psalm is about what God did with His chosen people, the Jews, and how they responded. God did great things for them, but their response was to do what was right in their own eyes.

Could God write this about any of us? Consider what He has done in your life and how has your response been? Ambivalence? Personal contentment because all is well? Mental acknowledgement that God is good? Or a deeply felt connection of love and appreciation with the One who is your source of all things and your security from all things?

Let’s not follow the example of the Jews, but let’s fall on our knees in thanksgiving and praise!

Suggested prayer: Lord Almighty, I’m sorry for taking You for granted . . .
