Names of Jesus — Yeshua and Christ!

Day 2286:  It has been very exciting to be focused on the names of Jesus during these past few days!!!

Scripture:  An angel speaking to Joseph in a dream – “And she will give birth to a son, and you shall call His name Jesus (Yeshua, Yehoshua), for it is He who will save His people from their sins!”  Matthew 1:21    Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!”  Matthew 16:16

Thoughts/questions:  We tend to think that when the Son of God was interacting with His disciples, they were calling Him Jesus – not so.  His Jewish peers probably referred to Him as Yehoshua or Yahshua, a Hebrew name we translate Joshua.  The Greek New Testament uses Yeshua, which is Jesus in English.  No matter if it is English or a Biblical language, the meaning of His name is clear – God is salvation. An angel also told Mary this same name, which was to serve as a continual reminder of His purpose every time someone called His name – our salvation!!!

Christ – the prophesied one who was to save His people, the Jews.  Peter’s comment to Jesus could be rendered, “Savior, you are the promised Savior!”  OK, we get it – He was meant to be our Savior.  Our sin has created the need for us to have a savior, which has synonyms of rescuer, liberator, knight in shining armor, and that Savior is Jesus Christ – Yehoshua/Yeshua!!!  Now we can only partially comprehend the impact of His role as our Savior.  However, when we die and because of Him are rescued from an eternity without God, then the full meaning of Jesus Christ – Yehoshua/Yeshua will be realized, and we will fall down before Him!

Suggested Prayer:  Jesus, You have rescued me from eternal death!  How can I thank You enough . . .
