Luke — A Set-up?

Day 3120: Quick reminder, I’ve been taking Sunday off instead of posting daily, so this is a post which is for Saturday and Sunday!

Scripture: When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to eat with him; so He went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? Luke 11:37-40    For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7b

Thoughts/questions: Did Jesus set-up this dialogue? I can’t imagine that He would exhibit poor hygiene – but then again, He could heal Himself if He were to get sick!

Whatever the case may be, Jesus used the situation to make a huge point – God is primarily concerned about the inside or heart of a person! The Pharisees obviously did not share that concern. Do we?

Today I will be speaking to the needy at the People’s Kitchen. Their ‘outsides’ often aren’t very impressive, but many of their hearts are flourishing. For me, it’s a monthly reminder regarding what really matters!

The ‘outside’ of us demands our attention. What are we wearing? How do we look? Do I need a shave? (now that I’m retired, that’s a question I actually ask!) What clothes will look good on me? What do the people I know think of me?

May we all share God’s focus and have clean and pure hearts!

Suggested Prayer: Lord Jesus, may I pay more attention to my ‘insides’ rather than just my ‘outsides’ . . .
