Luke — Is He Crazy?

Day 3130: More than half way to 2019 – wow! Enjoy the weekend!

Scripture:  Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” Luke 13:18, 19

Thoughts/questions: When Jesus’ listeners heard this, they thought one of two things – that He was crazy or that the kingdom of God wasn’t anything like earth. After all, who in their right mind would ever plant a mustard seed on their property???

My sister knows this only too well as her 5 acres on the Central Coast of California has mustard spreading all over, and I get rid of mine as soon as I see them! They do make the hills of the Central Coast a beautiful yellow during the Spring, but they can and will take over – not a plant to put in your garden!

So why would Jesus compare God’s kingdom to a crazed farmer ruining his own garden? It definitely awakened His audience and got their attention, but probably negative attention. This along with His confusing parables which He had to explain indicates Jesus was not really interested in casual followers.

His words were confusing and challenging. Only those who were sincere in their interest in His teachings would go past the obvious and seek to go deeper. Is this you? Do His words challenge and inspire you to go deeper? May this be true!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Jesus, may I always be challenged and inspired by Your words . . .
