James — Take Control and be Sure to Help!

Day 3179:  Seek to be a blessing to others!

Book of James  If I say that I am a follower of Christ, but I can’t control my tongue, my religion isn’t worth much. God’s idea of true Christianity is taking care of orphans and widows and remaining true to Him – without being stained by the world.   James 1:26, 27

Thoughts/questions: Challenge 1) Controlling my tongue: When I start my lawn mower, I pull the cheapest item on the mower – a small cord with a cheap handle. However, the mower isn’t worth much without it.  So it is with our speech. Our words are to give grace to the hearer (Ephesians 4:29c), so we need to demonstrate the value or worth of being a Christ follower by how we use our tongue!

Challenge 2) Taking care of the unfortunate:  The examples here, orphans and widows, represent people who, through no fault of their own, have difficult challenges. Today’s verses give us a focus as to the types of people God identifies as needing physical/financial expressions of the love Christ followers are supposed to demonstrate. Are you taking care of them?

Challenge 3) Without being stained by the world:  Stains – easy to get in; hard to get out. Our behavior can easily stain our character especially in regards to those who are closest to us. Be careful, remain true to Him or stains will eventually appear.

Wow, a full year of challenges in one day’s devotional!  Pray for God’s Spirit to guide you as you respond to His word.

Suggested prayer:  Lord, help me to remain true to You by controlling my tongue and taking care of those in need . . .
