James — Rich in Faith!

Day 3182: Headed to New York City today and hopefully can find a parking spot!!!

Scripture:   I need to understand the fact that God has chosen poor people to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him.  And yet I insulted the poor man.  I should realize that it is usually the rich who would exploit me and drag me into court and slander the name of Jesus Christ, to whom I belong.  I am doing well when I obey our Lord’s command, “I must love my neighbor as myself.”  But if I show favoritism, I am breaking God’s law and committing sin.  James 2:5-9

Thoughts/questions: The culture in Jesus’ day favored the rich maybe even more than our present money driven culture.  But in God’s economy, the poor are rich!  Rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom, which He promised to those who love Him!

God’s value system is different and seemingly confusing; the first shall be last, die to live, lead by being a servant, and here in James, poor people to be rich. James always encourages positive action – to love our neighbor as ourselves – similar to Jesus’ Golden Rule – I should treat others in the same way that I would want others to treat me!

Favoritism definitely goes against God’s will for us.  You have probably eliminated obvious forms of it, but how are you doing with more subtle aspects of it.  Are you treating those different than you (financial status/outward appearance/political beliefs/lifestyles/differing culture) in a way that might favor one or insult another?  Today, make sure you follow the Golden Rule!

Suggested prayer:   Lord, today and every day, help me to treat others in the same way that I would want them to treat me . . .
