James — Do the Right Thing!

Day 3195: Finishing the grand parenting seminar in Colorado today. Praying that many grandparents’ lives will be touched!

Scripture:  Therefore, when I know the right thing to do and don’t do it, that is sin.  James 4:17

Thoughts/questions: When the word ‘therefore’ is in the Bible, I’ve been taught to always ask, ‘What is the therefore there for’?  Well, this therefore comes after some great instructions regarding living as a Christ follower.

I think I made up this quote – maybe from this verse – ‘the right thing to do is the right thing to do no matter what happens’.  So often we make decisions based on the outcome of that decision, i.e, if we choose A, this probably will happen; but if we choose B, that probably will happen.  Then, if choosing A holds more positives than B, we choose A.  Not a bad decision making process, EXCEPT when we know A might not be the right thing to do.

James does not subscribe to ‘the ends justifies the means’ philosophy. A potentially great outcome should never outweigh the ‘rightness’ of the thing we choose to do.  God calls it sin when we know what we should do, but do what we want instead!

In other verses in James 4, the right thing to do includes seeking God’s will not our own; avoiding pride; submitting to God; drawing closer to Him; mourning our sins; humbling ourselves before God; taking care of our personal issues, not those of others; acknowledging God’s role in our future!  These ARE the right things to do, so the question is:  Are we doing the right thing?

Suggested prayer:  Lord, so often I’m faced with decisions and do whatever seems best for me.  Help me to get rid of my selfish motivations and always do the right thing . . .
